In 2026, the City of Hickory adopted a comprehensive transportation safety action plan called Hickory Moving Forward.
Hickory Moving Forward identifies key transportation safety concerns in the City, recommends safety countermeasures to address these concerns, and establishes a vision and goals for reducing the number of fatal and serious injury crashes that occur on Hickory roadways. The plan identifies high risk locations, as well as high injury locations, taking a proactive and reactive approach to safety planning.

The plan contains recommendations that reflect local priorities and that aim to implement a paradigm shift in safety culture in Hickory. The plan centers on a Safe System Approach, focusing on creating Safer People, Safer Vehicles, Safer Speeds, Safer Roads, and Post-Crash Care.
The plan is a guiding document to strengthen Hickory’s approach to addressing transportation safety, creating a future that reduces crashes and saves lives.
Between 2016 and 2023, more than 9,600 reported crashes occurred on local and state roadways. At least 127 people were killed or seriously injured.
