Storm debris and yard waste collection update

The City of Hickory Solid Waste Division thanks everyone for their continued patience and participation with the cleanup of storm debris following Hurricane Helene. For a limited time, the Solid Waste Division will waive special pickup fees specifically for yard waste.

Contractors are still required to haul all their materials off to a properly licensed facility for disposal. The City of Hickory has not given permission to any contractor to place any materials to the curb for pickup.

Most streets have been reopened, and crews are working as fast as safely possible to allow access to the remaining areas. Please be mindful, as there may still be power lines down or hanging low due to the storm.

Follow all requirements for placing items to the curb or it will further delay service.

Collection tips:

  • Contractors must haul their debris away to a proper disposal site and not to the curb.
  • Place yard waste and other debris in the open. Do not place it under low hanging power lines, branches, near parked vehicles, or block storm drains.
  • Do not stack yard waste or other debris in the street.
  • Do not mix debris placed at the curb. Yard waste, leaves, junk piles, and other debris all need to be in separate piles with proper spacing from obstructions.
  • Cut and stack limbs neatly. Major limbs should be cut away from the trunk and into pieces less than 6 feet in length.
  • Please lay all branches in a neat, uniform manner with the butt-end towards the curb.
  • Loose leaves, small clippings, and twigs need to be placed in reusable bags, clear plastic bags, or 32-gallon cans with the lid removed for pickup every week on your normal service day.
  • Please follow proper City protocols to minimize any additional issues or delays.

The Solid Waste Division thanks customers for their continued patience and cooperation as normal garbage, recycling, and yard waste services are being performed.
