Hickory 101 offered this fall

The City of Hickory will offer a five-week class called Hickory 101 for citizens wishing to learn about the inner workings of local government. Each week, participants will learn about City functions and departments by touring facilities, seeing demonstrations, and hearing presentations.

Hickory 101 is a condensed version of the popular Neighborhood College program that provides a broad overview of Hickory’s local government in five sessions. The class will start September 26 and run Thursday afternoons, from 1:30-5 p.m., through October 24. 

Topics covered will include the council-manager form of government, boards and commissions, fire and police, communications, airport, human resources, community and business development, planning, library, parks and recreation, public services, and more.

Hickory 101 was developed in 2016 as an alternative to the evening Neighborhood College program. The daytime schedule accommodates those who are unable to attend the more in-depth, 10-week, evening Neighborhood College program, which is next scheduled to run in the fall of 2025.

There is no cost to participate in Hickory 101, but space is limited to 20 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested individuals must register by Friday, August 30.
